Preventive Screening (ArbMedVV)

Duty, protection and counselling,
not a fitness check.

The German occupational medicine ordinance (ArbMedVV) obliges employers to offer or order preventive screenings for certain activities. The goal is not to determine whether someone is „fit", but prevention: detecting work-related illness early, offering individual counselling, designing risk work better.

A preventive screening is not a fitness test and not an assessment. It is a conversation between the employee and the doctor, clarifying whether the working conditions fit and what recommendations follow.

The outcome: occupational medical counselling for the employee, where appropriate a written recommendation to them personally. Diagnoses or findings do not go to the company.

Mandatory, offered, requested,
what applies when.

Mandatory screening

For particularly hazardous activities (e.g. noise > 85 dB, hazardous substances, biological agents). Prerequisite for the employee to perform the activity.

Typical: Welder · Care worker · Laboratory technician

Offered screening

For activities with elevated risk (e.g. display screen work, lifting/carrying, night and shift work). Employer must offer it, employees may accept or decline.

Typical: Display screen work · Night/shift work · Logistics

Requested screening (§ 5a ArbMedVV)

Employees request it on their own initiative. E.g. titre determinations during pregnancy for staff with occupational contact with children (Parvo B19, CMV) with associated counselling.

Typical: Perceived strain · Return to work · Titre determination

What to bring
to the screening.

So the appointment runs smoothly, employees bring the following.

  • ID card
  • Pre-filled medical history form (if sent beforehand)
  • Glasses / contact lenses (for display screen work, formerly G 37)
  • Hearing aids (for noise-exposed activities)
  • Current medication list (where relevant)
  • Vaccination record
From our practice philosophy

„A preventive screening is not a file, it is a conversation. Whoever has 30 minutes for their employee sees more than any checklist."

Commission a screening for your company.

Tell us briefly what activity it concerns and for how many employees. We sort the rest personally.
